Machado means crushed. Granizado means hail or coarse ice. So, a machacado granizado is basically a homemade slurpy. They can be made with different fruits and flavourings. Of course, I didn't know any of this when I asked Jose, the cart operator, what he was selling.
What I thought I heard Jose say was "we open the banana, we add vanilla, cinnamon, and milk in a cup". For about $1.70 Canadian, I thought it sounded tasty, reasonably healthy, and like a fun experience. I'll take one please.
What I got was a little different.... In a cup, some mashed banana. Check. Crushed ice. Good. Cinnamon and vanilla. Yep. A tonne of sweetened condensed milk. OMG!!!! I love the stuff. It's delicious. But that's a lotta sugar! Of course I ate it all!
Pictures
1 - The sign spells ganisados with an "s". Google translate seems to prefer a "Z". Either way, it was a fun experience!
2- Jose handing me my treat. The presentation was so pretty and cheerful!
3- My view towards the north while I enjoyed my machacado granisado
4-When I asked Jose to take a picture of his cart, before I bought my machacado, he seemed a bit confused about my interest, and shy about being in the picture.
5 - Even the empty cup was pretty!
