So far, we’ve eaten in some cute touristy places. Café Zen, owned by Sarah from the UK is one of them. The place is cute and green and a lovely oasis in the tourist zone. We’ve also eaten in many small local places. The décor in these can vary from kinda funky to just plain mmmm.....funky…. But the food has been almost always so tasty!!!
Our first favourite local restaurant was a little place in the
tourist zone, beside Reggies guest house where we stayed. It's called D.A.S Hotel. Is it associated with a hotel? I'm not sure.
At first, the owner/operator didn’t seem to
know what to make of us. I admit. I wasn't sure what to make of the restaurant... But after our
third day of having breakfast there, I felt mostly right at home and there was a pleasant
connection.
2 - Toby having tea at the Zen Cafe. Such a cute tea pot and cup!
3- Many sri Lankans eat curry for breakfast lunch and dinner. At breakfast, the curry is often served with parahta, a delicious chewy flat bread. Sometimes, there’s an egg sandwiched in the paratha. Then it’s called bittara. The clay pots contain the curry and some dahl. The plastic bags above the pots are for take-out. The food goes directly in the bags.
4- Breakfast! Sri Lankans eat with their right hand. No cutlery. The left hand is for washroom stuff...Notice the napkin holder. It has little squares of newspaper for napkins. I didn't use them much because the ink made my fingers and mouth black. I'm guessing that doesn't show as much on brown skin??? On our third day, they had little squares of plain white paper just for me. How kind!

5 & 6 - Because they eat with their hands, restaurants provide various ways to clean your hands before eating. Sometimes, they give you a (stainless steel) bowl of hot water to swish your fingers in. But pretty much always there's a sink handy for washing before and after you eat. The little pile of noodles are called string hoppers. It's a rice batter pushed through a thingy that makes the noodles.
7-9 This was a local restaurant downtown. Very busy! Great food! All served in / on stainless steel. What's cool and kinda weird for me....some restaurants serve you the curries and other things on platters and servers. What you don't eat goes back to the kitchen and gets served again. People here seem healthy, and I am too so far. So I'm going with it!!
