Sri Lankans don't eat much beef. That's because cattle are considered sacred in Buddhism, the major religion here. Google says there are about 1.7 million cattle in Sri Lanka, distributed among 0.6 holdings. Most of them small. That means an average of 3 cattle per herd.
Toby, my travel companion, comes from Sri Lanka. He is an awesome source of information! He told me that the street cows (I prefer the word cow to cattle. It's more fun to say. Just saying....) are owned by families who have only one cow and limited land. So they let them roam free to graze throughout the day. Apparently, they come home at night. How fun!
Pictures
1 and 2- A street cow!! It walked right down the main road. With traffic weaving around it. Nerves of steel!
3-Golden cow rusks...looks like a baby teething biscuit. I love the name!
4- The beach side of our first accommodation. Reggies in Negombo. Did I mention that Toby's cousin works there? Small world coincidence!
5- A fishing/tour boat/catamaran on Negombo beach.
6- A church portico. Very peaceful place.
7- I so love these! Most of the plastic lawn chairs are molded to look like pretty wooden chairs!
