Settling In

It rained on and off all day.  But that was ok, because today was mostly about errands and settling in.

My first significant mission, was to go get my bicycle at Pat's house. Pat is a Canadian who sold her house and car in Canada, to retire here in Cozumel.  She lives two blocks from me, in a house she bought about two years ago.  Pat was home because of the rain.  Otherwise, she would have been out swimming, then snorkelling. Retirement is pretty tough....

It was great to catch up with her. She's fun and friendly and straightforward.  Mine, was one of four bicycles she stored for friends throughout the year.  Apparently, some of her "bicycle storage" friends even store pots and pans with her while away.  I admit, my bicycle basket had a yoga mat in it....She doesn't seem to mind. I brought her coffee and Smarties (her choices) to thank her.  I imagine others show their appreciation in similar ways.

I am so excited to have my bicycle!!  It's small, heavy, and slow, but my ancient green folding Czechoslovakian bike gives me such a sense of freedom!!  I still have to put air in the tires, but I can't wait to get out on it to explore.

The only other significant events for me today were buying groceries and chatting with Joan. Joan lives Ottawa.  I met her at the pool where I often swim. When I got back from Mexico last year, she saw my tan lines in the shower (a little awkward but it happens....) and asked about my trip.  She's an experienced traveler but liked the idea of coming to a place that came with great recommendations and where she knows someone. She has her own apartment in the same complex as me.  It was nice to have her company today.  I usually walk or bicycle to run errands.  But we both got lots of groceries to set ourselves up, so we walked to the store and shared a taxi home.  Nice!

Many houses have a "name" here.  This is the name of Pat's house.
My kitchen, and first pineapple!!
I am on vacation....
